The DPI Gear Up program
by Heidi M. Pascual
When Laurie Rasmussen Duran of the Department of Public Instruction's Gear Up- EIP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs-Early Identification Program) invited me to be the keynote speaker for their 6th annual Recognition Banquet May 18 at the Lowell Center in the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, I didn't think twice; I said 'yes' right away. My reason was that I am always willing to share my life experiences with youth who struggle to get an education, and with parents who push their children to create their future through higher learning.
Above, left-right: Mai Vue Thao, Mee Her, Mai Yia Xiong, and Zoua Yang are Gear Up program participants who entertained the audience with a Hmong dance.
