Memorial High School
Ban Nee Alfafara is second to none in her determination to reach academic
success. Ban Nee is actively involved with Cyber Patriots, Spartan Youth Service
and Future Business Leaders of America. She took first place in cyber security in
2012 at the FLBA regional convention and first place in the state of Wisconsin FBLA
competition for cyber security, also in 2012.She was a delegate for Wisconsin to
the National FBLA conference. Ban Nee became a certified nursing assistant in
2013.
Anupama Bhattacharya has been in the swim of academic achievement at
Memorial High. Anupama has lettered for two of the four years that she has been
on the swimming team. She has honed her communication skills through drama,
debate and forensics. She was runner up in the state demonstration speaking
competition her sophomore year and won the Big Eight conference for two years.
Anupama enjoys dancing the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam. Within the art
form, Anupama had her coming-of-age performance when she did a solo
performance of the highly demanding Arangetram. In her free time, Anupama is a
swimming instructor at MSCR for children six months and above. She is also
teaching a retired woman how to use her computer for day-to-day tasks.
Kevin Cao has been a leader in STEM-related activities at Memorial while striving
for academic excellence. Kevin is a founder of the botany club, led a varsity math
club team and was a team organizer and leader for the Science Olympiad. He also
competed in tennis and developed leadership skills in student government. Kevin
worked in a research internship at the UW-Madison department of biochemistry. He
also did an internship at Lakeland Hospital. Kevin has volunteered with Lakeland
Hospice, the Memorial greenhouse construction and at an elementary school.
Angela Chien has had her designs on academic excellence during her Memorial
career. Angela is active with the anime club and took first place in the Visioneer
Design Challenge.
A National Honor Society member, Emily Chu has shown that school and
community involvement and outstanding grades go together. Emily is active with
peer partners, Key Club, art club and the Zumba dance club. Through backyard
community, Emily has helped keep the school grounds nice by planting flowers,
picking up trash and other work. Out in the community, Emily has volunteered at
Middleton Outreach Ministry where she helped raise money and collect food for
those with no food. She also volunteered at Oakwood Village where she served
residents at the Oakwood Village Shoppe. Emily has received many recognitions
due to her high grade point average. Her excellence earned her scholarships from
Memorial High donors and the National Honor Society.
Harini Desikan
A National Honor Society member, Sachin Dharwadker has explored the
performing arts while pursuing academic excellence at Memorial High. He is
an officer for the school drama club and an officer for the forensics team. He
also sings with the Memorial Singers. In 2011, Sachin and a friend made the
video “I Am JMM,’ which won grand prize from the Wisconsin Association of
School Board’s Student Video Awards. Sachin produces graphic designs and
video for the school. He also competed on the basketball team. Sachin has
been a forensics coach, a peer partner, a Link Crew member and a member of
the Key Club.
A member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, Katrina
Gonzales
is an AP scholar who has stayed perched on the high honor roll with a
3.98 GPA. Katrina has competed in varsity volleyball and on the math team. She
has explored the private sector through Future Business Leaders of America.
Katrina has sung in the school choir, helped other students through the Link
Crew and sharpened her leadership skills in student government. In the
community, Katrina was part of the Youth Volunteer Corps and helped plan the
Global Youth Service Day. She is also a program leader for MSCR.
David Ho has let his leadership and STEM light shine during his high school
career at Memorial. With a 3.39 GPA, David has taken many AP courses including
calculus, chemistry and biology and has already taken three STEM-related
courses at UW-Madison. David improved his academic and computer skills
through the Information Technology Academy. He was captain of a National
Science Bowl team that took third place at regionals. David was also president of
the Science Olympiad and the Spanish club. He is a yearbook editor and has
performed with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra. David has competed on
the JV cross country, JV tennis, freshman basketball, ping pong and varsity math
teams. David has done internships with ARISGAMES and Promega. In his free
time, David volunteers with the Middleton Public Library, Brat Fest, gift wrapping
with ITA and Spartan Youth Service activities such as bell ringing for the Salvation
Army and Christmas caroling. David is planning on studying bioengineering at
UW-Madison this fall.
While striving for academic excellence at Memorial High, Carrie Ip has explored
many endeavors. Carrie competed in cross country and learned to help others
through Link Crew, Spartan Youth Service and peer partners. Carrie was also a
member of the yearbook staff and explored business through Future Business
Leaders of America. Out in the community, Carrie has been part of Youth
Volunteer Corps.
Mai Doua Lee has kept her Asian roots while excelling academically at Memorial
and being of service to the community. Mai Doua was secretary of the Asian club
and helped with fundraising and helped plan the Asian Talent Show and the
Asian Tournament. Mai Doua was active in the Youth Apprenticeship Program
and took a CAN class at Madison College while maintaining a full high school
load. She also was involved with Spartan Youth Service and helped plan Spirit
Day and donated clothing to children in need. Out in the community, Mai Doua
had volunteered extensively with St. Mary’s Hospital. Mai Doua’s excellence has
been recognized with a South Madison Rotary youth award, an American Legion
award and a CUNA Mutual scholarship.
A National Honor Society member, Daniel Li has been a part of the excellence
competition at Memorial High. Daniel has learned to be of service to others
through his activism with the Student Support Foundation and Spartan Youth
Service. He was a member of the yearbook staff and participated in student
government. Daniel has competed in debate, forensics, math, cross country and
tennis. He was also a part of Student Voice. In the community, Daniel has
volunteered with the Heartland Farm Sanctuary. Daniel’s 4.0 GPA has attracted a
lot of academic honors. He is a Coca Cola Scholar, a National Merit Finalist, a
National AP Scholar, a Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholar and an
Academic Excellence Scholar. Daniel was named a Most Valuable Student by
the Wisconsin Elks Foundation and a Rotary Club Outstanding Senior.
Joshua Lin has been perfect in his academic excellence at Memorial High. A 4.0
GPA student, Joshua has used his time to explore different interests. He
volunteered through Spartan Youth Service and competed in the Ultimate Frisbee
club and the varsity math team. Joshua took violin lessons for two years and was
a member of a church youth group and the French club. Joshua has helped out
at his church as a cook and Sunday school teacher. He has tutored other
students in chemistry and volunteered with the Salvation Army, Oakwood Village
and Middleton Outreach Ministries. And if Joshua wasn’t busy enough, he has
managed to hold down a part-time job at Target.
As a 4.0 GPA student, Andrew Liu has been a member of the National Honor
Society and received a National Merit Commended and AP Scholar with
Distinction honors. Andrew has been captain of the varsity tennis team and
explored the health professions through Health Occupations Students of
America and volunteer work at UW Hospital & Clinics. He is an editor of the
Simpson Street Free Press and has filled his summers with internships  at the
Wisconsin State Journal, WISC-TV3 and UW-Madison physics department. He
has volunteered with Rising Stars tennis and MathCounts. Andrew has played
violin for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and was named to the
Wisconsin State Honors Orchestra. He received a 1 Rating at the Wisconsin
State Solo & Ensemble competition.
A member of the National Honor Society, Christina Ma has tickled the academic
ivories while enjoying a well-rounded Memorial career. Christina competed on
the girl’s JV tennis squad and volunteered through Spartan Youth Service. She
developed her writing skills on the Sword & Shield student newspaper and the
yearbook club. Christina is very involved in her church. She went on a 2011
mission trip to Mississippi, assists with the children’s ministry and
accompanies the worship team on piano. She is also a math tutor. Christina
has won first place, runner-up and honorable mention in the Wisconsin Music
Teachers Association piano competition and was honorable mention in the
Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra concerto competition.
While on her way to academic excellence, Mariel Ma stayed involved in many
clubs such as the Chinese club and FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics during her
Memorial career. In addition to doing a lot of volunteering, Mariel is graduating as
an AP scholar with high honors who will be attending the University of
California-Irvine this fall.
A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, Michael Meyer
has been academically and athletically competitive during his Memorial career.
Michael competed on the freshman football team, tennis team, the ski team and the
cross country team. He developed his leadership skills as a member of Future
Business Leaders of America, as a backyard rep and as a member of the Backyard
Representative Leadership Committee. He has given back to school and community
through Spartan Youth Service and Key Club. Michael was given an Outstanding
Student Award by the Madison South Rotary.
A member of the National Honor Society, Alexander Nguyen was also named an AP
Scholar on his way to academic success at Memorial High. Alexander participated
in student leadership activities, CANstruction and Spanish club. He helped publish
the yearbook and funneled his community service efforts such as bell ringing for the
Salvation Army through Spartan Youth Service from which he received an All-Star
Award.
Trang Nguyen has had her sights on the STEM heavens during her Memorial High
stay. Trang studied biotechnology through the Youth Apprenticeship Program,
landing a placement in the lab of Dr. Brian Fox in the UW-Madison department of
biochemistry. She has been a part of NASA Women in STEM High School and the
Aerospace Scholars Program. Trang also found the time to compete in tennis and
debate. Trang has given back to community through Spartan Youth Service and
peer tutoring.  She has also volunteered at a kids’ summer science program.
Trang’s 3.98 GPA and hard work resulted in being named an AP Scholar with
Distinction and Commended National Merit Student. Trang will be attending the
University of Georgia on a Foundation Fellowship.
As she made the transition from her native Laos, Yengthao Phialuang did not
lose her drive for academic excellence. In spite of the transition, Yengthao
earned a 3.19 GPA She participated in Asian club, Asian Pop Club and Escalera
after school tutoring. Yengthao also helped raise money for ELL students so they
could go on field trips and participate in other projects. As an older sibling,
Yengthao helps out with cooking, cleaning and gardening. And as a family, they
help set-up for the Hmong New Year celebration at the Alliant Energy Center.
Yengthao received a Betty Perego scholarship.
Nivedhitha Prabakaran has achieved acclaim academically and in other areas
at Memorial High. Nivedhitha competed in forensics speaking and became the
state champion in demonstration speaking and was part of the forensics team
that became state champions. And her Ultimate Frisbee team also became
state champions. Nivedhitha developed her leadership skills through student
government and competed on the tennis team. She was also on the yearbook
staff, participated in drama and served the community through Spartan Youth
Service. Nivedhitha stayed just as involved in the community helping out at Asha
for Education, the UW Arboretum and the Lussier Community Education Center.
She has also been a youth coordinator at the Hindu Temple and a dance
instructor. Nivedhitha was named a WCATY Young Scholar.
A member of the National Honor Society, Tarjani Ranade has competed with
the best at Memorial High. Tarjani earned a four year award and varsity letter for
her efforts with the girls’ tennis team. She has been co-editor of the yearbook
staff and a Backyard Rep. Tarjani has tutored in math and serves the
community through Spartan Youth Service. Tarjani studied classical Indian
violin for eight years and played at the National Indian Music Festival and at the
Shri Harimandir Temple in New Jersey. She also volunteered with Art of Living,
the UW Carbone Cancer Research Center, Adopt-A-Highway and Reach-A-
Child warehouse. She was also a volunteer coach with MathCounts. Tarjani
has been on the honor roll and high honor roll, received a Star Award from
Spartan Youth Service and a Midwest Talent Search recognition.
With a 4.0 GPA, Kelly Shen has been a STEM star during her Memorial High
career. Kelly competed in the Science Olympiad, the math team and varsity
tennis for four years. She was tennis co-captain and MVP of the tennis team in
2012. Kelly honed her leadership skills as class treasurer and Spartan Youth
Service treasurer all four years. She has also volunteered on the Link Crew and
with Amigos de las Americas, One Million Bones and MathCounts and has been
a peer tutor. An accomplished pianist, Kelly was a semi-finalist in the Madison
Symphony Orchestra’s Bolz Artist competition and won the Wisconsin State
Badgers Competition. Kelly was named a National AP Scholar and is a National
Merit Finalist.
Mary Vang has shown great potential for providing leadership to the Asian
American community during her Memorial High career. Mary was vice-president of
the Asian Pop Club that she helped found to introduce other students to Asian
cultures. Last summer, Mary was vice-president of the Laos Foundation which
raised awareness of the poverty of the Hmong people in Laos and raised money
to purchase food and clothing that they personally delivered to the refugee camps.
Mary has also explored working with young children and will receive a teaching
certificate once she completes the class. Mary received a positive behavior award
from Verona High in 2010 and an academic honors award from West in 2011.
A member of the National Honor Society with a 4.0 GPA, Thejas Wesley has
explored STEM-related fields as he competed in student life at Memorial.
Thejas did research internships with UW Dept. of Chemical & Bioengineering,
UW Dept. of Industrial & Systems Engineering and the ECHO Lake Aquarium
and Science Center in Vermont. He competed on the varsity cross country team
where he was senior assistant captain and in track & field, the Science
Olympiad and the math team. Thejas performed trumpet with the jazz band and
pep band. He was sports editor for the Sword & Shield and selected to be in the
Spartans Student Leaders Group. He has also volunteered as a literacy tutor
and with the Special Olympics, MathCounts and Crazy Legs Run. Thejas plans
to attend Princeton University or UW-Madison to study chemical engineering.
Edwin Wu has exercised his leadership potential at Memorial while
maintaining his 4.0 GPA. Edwin is founder of the Social Justice Book club,
treasurer for the debate, drama and forensics team and an editor of the
yearbook. He also competed on the math team and the cross country team. He
explored the health professions through HOSA. In his free time, Edwin has
volunteered as a MathCounts tutor, forensics coach and at the Iron Man
competition. And while maintaining his excellence, Edwin has held down
part-time jobs at Panera Bread for a year and did an internship at Lucigen Corp.
Justin Xayarinh has stayed on track to enter the next level of his education while
at Memorial. As a member of the UW PEOPLE Program, Justin is well prepared
for college. He has competed on the boys’ cross country, tennis and track & field
teams. Justin has performed as a member of the pep band and pit orchestra.
Justin has also been active on the yearbook staff, the Asian club, HOSA, Spartan
Youth Service and the Chinese club. He went on a Rotary Club trip to China in
2010 and did a computer program internship with Vindyha Ventrackmen. In the
community, Justin has volunteered at UW Badger games concessions, Olin Park
and a Huegel Elementary School carnival. In spite of his busy schedule, Justin
takes private clarinet lessons and  has worked at Woodmans and Sears.
A member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society,
William Xiang has found perfection in his academic pursuits at Memorial. With
a 4.0 GPA, William is a National Merit Scholarship winner and 2013
Presidential Scholar candidate. William exhibited his leadership skills as
co-editor-in-chief of the Sword & Shield newspaper and co-captain of the varsity
tennis team. He also competed in the Science Olympiad and on the math team.
William has been very giving of his time. He volunteered at UW Hospital and
has been a Greater Madison Tennis Association Rising Stars coach, a
MathCounts coach, a peer tutor and a literacy mentor.
Kelly Yang has been headed for college since she set foot in Memorial High.
As a member of the UW PEOPLE Program, Kelly has been preparing for that
next step. She has let her leadership skills shine as vice-president and then
president of the Asian club, which promotes cultural awareness and
sponsors sports tournaments.
A National Honor Society member, Branavan Yogarajah has met the challenge
on and off the field. Branavan has competed on the cross country, soccer,
Ultimate Frisbee and math teams. He has explored the health professions
through Health Occupations Students of America and the world of business
through Future Business Leaders of America. Until last January, Branavan
worked part time at Glass Nickel Pizza.
Shuruthy Yogarajah has emerged as a leader during her Memorial High
career. Shuruthy is captain of the girls’ cross country team and treasurer of
the National Honor Society. She is vice-president of Future Business
Leaders of America and went to the national convention. Shuruthy has been
a Backyard Rep for three years and a class officer all four years including
president during the current school year. She also was active in Student
Voice and competed on the math team. She was a peer partner and went to
Badger Girls State. And Shuruthy works part time at Dairy Queen as a crew
member.
Abraham Yoo has been in perfect harmony with academic achievement
during his stay at Memorial High. Abraham performs in the pit orchestra for
school musicals and has performed with the pep band. He competed in
freshman and JV tennis and on the math team. He completed an
independent study. Abraham is an accomplished musician in the
community. He has performed with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony
Orchestra. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Music Association High
School Honors Band. Abraham has performed in the MMSD High School
Jazz Festival and for the musical Oliver produced by the Stage Works Project.
He has also participated in the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic and UW-
Milwaukee’s and UW-Madison’s Double Reed Day. Abraham placed first at
the 2012 WSMA competition. He has received an Allegro Music Club and
Spartan Spirit scholarships.
