MAY 2024, WASHINGTON, DC —his month isn't just a mere calendar notation, it's a time to celebrate the vibrancy of our cultures, the resilience of our communities, and the countless contributions we've made to society. For too long, our communities and our stories were relegated to the margins. But in this month, we reclaim our space, our identities, our narratives, and our power!
The origins of this observance date back to 1978 when Asian American staffers and congressional members worked together to pass a resolution declaring the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, commemorating the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and marking the completion of the transcontinental railroad by mostly Chinese laborers on May 10, 1869. In 1992, President George H.W. Bush extended the observance to the entire month, officially designating May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
To celebrate this month, especially during a pivotal presidential election year, we want to highlight the strength of the AAPI electorate, from California to Maine. To do so we are providing this social media toolkit in it, you will find a graphic for each state that highlights the latest facts about the AAPI electorate based on our most recent 2024 State Fact Sheets. We've provided some social media copy you can borrow from. We encourage you to post in the first week of May and tag us!
AAPI Voters are Growing
Their Impact Nationwide
Overview
This Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we want to highlight the growing power of our communities ahead of the 2024 elections – one of the most important elections in our country’s history for AAPIs.
As many of you know, AAPIs have seen a dramatic increase in political power in the past decade, especially since 2020 – and people are noticing.
Let’s continue educating not just our communities, but all of our combined audiences, on just how exactly our communities are shaping the political landscape across the country.
We encourage your organization to use this toolkit to highlight the growing power of the AAPI electorate in your state. Graphics for all 50 states are available.
