A video report by Heidi M. Pascual
The WI Dept. of Public Instruction's GEAR UP/EIP Program  9th Annual Recognition Banquet
was held May 27, 2008 at the Lowell Center in Madison, Wis. Participating students who received
awards came with their parents or guardians. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) and EIP (Early Identification Program) work with
students at Madison East High School and O'Keeffe, Black Hawk and Sherman Middle Schools,
to encourage them to pursue a higher education.  Kabzuag Vaj, executive director of Freedom
Inc., delivered the keynote speech, inspiring the students to dream and make their dreams come
true, as she did.  There were also entertainment numbers from East High School, including a
duet "Because you love me," by Richard Scott and Akouvi Nofodji (a graduating senior), dedicated
to the parents of the participants, and a Capoeira dance.
