IGSA presents
An all-women Carnatic Instrumental Ensemble
a video report by Dennis Alfred M. Pascual
On March 27, 2009, The Indian Graduate Students Association (IGSA) of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison sponsored a free concert of Carnatic Music at the Grat Hall of UW Memorial
Union. The artists included Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi (Violin); Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar (Flute); Rajna
Swaminathan (Mridangam); Jayashree Jairaj (Veena); Bhagyalakshmi Muralikrishna (Morching). The
Concert Program describes Classical music as one of the tradiditonal facets of Indian culture. It further
says that the South Indian (Carnatic) and the North Indian (Hindustani) styles present two different
manifestations of classical music, and that these two styls use a similar structural framewok to provide
enormous opportunities to display spontaneous musical creativity.
The artists who performed in this concert indeed exhibited this special creativity.
