HABITAT FOR HUMANITY building houses in rural Vietnam
An Open Invitation to our Readers:
My name is Julie Pfluger. My husband, Ray Trent, and I are going to Vietnam with Habitat for Humanity to do a blitz build from
September 30 through October 8, 2016. What is a blitz build? It is Habitat for Humanity’s largest international event of 2016, the
Vietnam Big Build. Ray and I and 300 volunteers from around the world will build housing with a rural community of tea farmers.
On the build site, we will build homes and detached bathrooms with low-income partner families. The Vietnamese province
where we will be building - Phu Tho - has urgent economic needs and will welcome Habitat’s influx of volunteers and
resources.
Both Ray and I believe that everyone—all of us, every last person —deserves decent shelter. It speaks to the most basic of
human needs—our home—the soil from which all of us either blossom or wither. I know the importance of housing personally
because my aunt and her three daughters (my cousins) lost their house in the Joplin tornado in 2011. It was a very traumatic
event and they lost everything, including their home, but they were unharmed, and today they live in a new house that was built by
Habitat for Humanity. Ray also knows the importance of housing personally - after retiring from 26 years in the army as a 1SG,
Ray is now a carpenter full-time and volunteers his time and talents with Project Home, helping make veterans home accessible
and energy efficient.
Ray is the house committee chairman at VFW Post 1318 in Madison. As a fundraiser, we are planning on holding a happy hour
at this VFW (off of John Nolen) on July 28 from 5p-8p, and we need to start preparing for our event. We'd love to see you at our
happy hour (See above flyer.) We have brats on the bbq, a live band, free door prizes and tons and tons of great raffle prizes and
silent auctions! And, if you have any other fundraising ideas, I'd love to hear them!
I know we all agree that everyone deserves a safe place to sleep, a place to raise a family, a place to form a community - things
most of us take for granted. We know we can make our goals with the help of this community and truly make a difference in the
lives of the people of Phu Tho. Please consider coming out to our event, or donating to a really great cause.
Thank you!
