ALBERT M. CHAN'S "FATE SCORES" TO SCREEN AT THE
WISCONSIN FILM FESTIVAL
Featuring Madison-Born Actress Mary Niederkorn
Madison, WI - March 16, 2009 - FATE SCORES, a film by director and actor Albert M. Chan, will premiere
at Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art (800 University Avenue) on April 5th, 2009, at 1pm as part of the
Wisconsin Film Festival. The film is also part of the series Disparate Voices: Asian American Film, which
is presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Asian American Studies Program.
FATE SCORES, which is set at a city park bench, explores themes of isolation, connection, and chance,
and is a thoughtful look at the seemingly random interactions between ten strangers which eventually
culminate into something extraordinary.
As part of an underrepresented ethnic minority in film and TV, Chan cast actors who reflect the ethnic
diversity he was accustomed to seeing while growing up in Toronto, Canada, and spending the past
twelve years in Boston. “I’m proud to say that ethnic minorities make up about half the cast,” Chan
said.
This ensemble cast includes Chan’s close friend, Madison native Mary Niederkorn, who plays a woman
suffering from a mysterious ailment. Originally a classically trained soprano, Niederkorn went on hiatus
from vocal performance due to a battle with ovarian cancer. After undergoing treatment, she returned to
performance with renewed vigor, deciding to express herself artistically in a more personal way through
acting. Chan worked with Mary to prepare for her role in FATE SCORES, drawing upon her experiences as
an ovarian cancer survivor. “Shooting the film was extremely emotional for me, especially with my son
also in the cast,” Niederkorn reveals. “But I’m extremely grateful to be able to pursue my dream of
acting.” Niederkorn’s son, Ben Katz, plays a curious boy with an ice cream cone in FATE SCORES.
Chan is an experienced film and TV actor who recently broadened his interests to filmmaking with FATE
SCORES, his first film. His acting credits include roles on Showtime’s BROTHERHOOD, the pilot episode
for CW Network’s I’M PAIGE WILSON, and Disney’s feature film UNDERDOG. Chan next appears as Sam
in New Line Cinema’s GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner,
and Michael Douglas, which opens May 1st, 2009, in theaters nationwide. Chan also recently finished
wrapping up a role as Dr. Lee in the upcoming film EVERY DAY starring Helen Hunt, Liev Schreiber, Brian
Dennehy, and Carla Gugino.
FATE SCORES is produced by Chanal Productions, in association with Aaron Howland and Seth Howland
of 7 Fluid Oz. Productions LLP. For more information about the film, visit http://fatescores.com.
