| Madison, WI -- Longtime west side resident Thuy Pham-Remmele announced her candidacy today to represent Madison's 20th aldermanic district. |
| Pham-Remmele came to Madison from Vietnam as a Fulbright Scholar in 1973. She remained in Madison, retiring from the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) after 28 years of teaching and now wants to serve the community that embraced her. |
| In 1981, Pham-Remmele and her husband David purchased their first home in the Orchard Ridge/Meadowood Neighborhoods and the family has lived in the area ever since. |
| "I have decided to run for City Council in order to speak up on behalf of our neighbors. As an independent candidate, I strongly believe I have the common sense, integrity, and dedication to serve as an alderperson. Accountability at every level of city government is important to me" she said. |
| "I will keep an eye on city spending and work to secure improved city services, especially police, fire, and streets for our neighborhoods," said Pham-Remmele. "Public safety for our residents, our children, and our businesses are important to me. As taxpayers, all of us should demand the right to feel safe at all times and not be intimidated by criminal activities." |
| Pham-Remmele would maybe be the first Asian-American woman ever elected to serve a municipal public office in Wisconsin. |

| Pham-Remmele has a long history of giving to the Madison Community. She served as the Mayor's Coordinator for the Madison Outreach Initiative to Asian Communities and was recognized in 2003 by the Wisconsin State Journal as one of "Ten Who Made A Difference in Madison in 2002." Pham-Remmele has donated her services and skills to numerous state and local organizations including WI-Department of Public Instruction (DPI), WI-Department of Health & Family Services (DHFS), Dane County Human Services, Catholic Social Services, United Refugee Services of Wisconsin (URSW), Madison Public Library (MPL), UW-Madison Memorial Library, UW- Extension, among many others. She has received numerous awards and recognitions including Honorary Member of the Golden Apple Club for "Significant Contribution to Educational Excellence by the MMSD Joint Task Force on Educational Excellence, National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) & Reader's Digest's Wisconsin's 1991-92 Teacher-Scholar of the Year. She was also awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the UW-Madison Women's Studies Research Center for 1985-1987. |
| Nationally she has served on the Selection Committee for the Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), was vice-President then Treasurer for the National Association for the Education & Advancement of Cambodian, Laotian & Vietnamese Americans (NAFEA). She continues to provide services to Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), National Alliance of Vietnamese- American Service Agencies (NAVASA), and Vien Viet Hoc, (The Institute of Vietnamese Studies). |
| Professionally she served as officer and held membership in National Education Association (NEA), Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE), and Wisconsin Educational Association Council (WEAC), among others. |
