| Despite the first severe snow storm this fall that hit the state of Wisconsin today, Dec. 1, more than 50 members and guests attended the Wisconsin Women of Color Network Inc. (WWOCN)'s annual fund-raiser (silent auction) and awarding of scholarships at DoubleTree Hotel. After the welcome remarks of President Rachelle Ashley, Merta Maaneb DeMacedo, delivered an inspirational message titled "Why I Chose to Be a Nurse." Entertainment was provided by the following: * Kelly Hartshorn (Harp) * N'Jameh Camara and Rachel Zembrowski of the Dominican High School Chamber & Concert Choir (Holiday Songs) * Cecilia Leon of UW-Madison* (Spoken Word titled "God Women") * Valerie Patterson (Love Songs) The following 2007 WWOCN Scholarship recipients were presented by Georgia Pride Euler, Chairperson, Scholarship Committee: Mabel Smith Memorial Scholars: * Shamir Baskin (Blackhawk Technical College, Dental Assistant Program) * Melanie Melton (Milwaukee Area Technical College, Sign Language Program) Cammer-Hill Grant Scholars: * Merta Maaneb DeMacedo (Marquette University, Nursing) * Domonique Rogers (Marian College, Child Psychology) There were booths that displayed their holiday (and all-season) offerings for WWOCN attendees: Asian Wisconzine; Discovery Toys, Flowers of Color, Joluli Enterprise, Satyam Ayur Vedic, Warm Spirit, Sew Nubian, Angelle Internationale, Phyllis Faces & Ceramics, Simply Silver, Hartshorn Portraits, and the Wisconsin Well Women Program. The spirit of love and giving was truly felt by all on this annual festive occasion. ---- * Come see Cecilia Leon perform at the First annual UW Collegiate Poetry Slam for a chance to represent UW at the Collegiate National Slam Competition 2008 -- round 1, Mon.
