INDIA DAY 2009
“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world
sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment
comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step
out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when
the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.....
We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers
herself again.”
— PM Jawaharlal Nehru, Aug. 15, 1947

On Aug. 15, 2007, Indian Americans in Wisconsin, like
all Indians throughout the world, celebrated the 62nd
anniversary of India’s Independence from British rule. Led
by AIA (Association of Indians in America-Wisconsin
Chapter), the happy occasion — held for the first time in
front of the City-County Building along Martin Luther King
Blvd. (usual location is the Library Mall) in Madison —
featured performances from the young generation, starting
from the singing of the National Anthems of India and the
United States to traditional Indian classical dances and
songs to Bollywood acts. Performers included the
Kalaanjali dancers, Dhamaka Girls, Surya Ganesan,
Deepa Sanwal, Rohit Malshe, Lucky Shahal, and dancers
led by Nitin Saini, Arul Sundaramoorthy, and Jahnavi Bora.
The significance of the occasion was visibly reflected on
the faces of these young participants. Congratulations, AIA!
