63 area youth learn basic first-aid skills
On Tuesday, August 7, participants learned about fire safety with a special presentation by Bernadette Galvez, City of Madison Fire Department Community Education Specialist. Camp participants toured a fire truck and Emergency Response Vehicle #9 and heard more from the Madison Fire Department about how the vehicles respond to emergencies in the community.
On Wednesday, August 8, the youth delved into the topics of poison and wounds, and also practiced Rescue Breathing and how to help a choking victim on adult and infant manikins. A graduation ceremony featuring the program mascot, Safe T. BAT, followed the completion of the course.

About Basic Aid Training

Basic Aid Training, or BAT, has been funded by (GHC-SCW) for the past 12 years. The program is designed for children ages 8 to 10 years old and teaches basic first aid and emergency response. The program is made possible through a partnership with GHC-SCW and the American Red Cross-Badger Chapter. Through the GHC-SCW funding, the Red Cross is able to offer this program in Madison area schools year round. GHC-SCW offers the summer camp to provide an additional opportunity for children to take the course.
Sixty-three area youth learned first aid, emergency response and basic safety skills at the annual Basic Aid Training (BAT) Summer Safety Camp on Tuesday, August 7 and Wednesday, August 8.
The program was sponsored by Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW) in cooperation with the American Red Cross. BAT camp took place at the American Red Cross, 4860 Sheboygan Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin.
The camp offered youth the opportunity to learn how to prevent as well as respond to emergency situations. The hands-on lessons included emergency response, rescue breathing, first-aid for choking, fire safety, injury prevention and wound care, and other safety-related activities.
