Nepali American New Year Celebration
The joy of family and community
Nepalis in the Diaspora nourish their traditions and culture not
only through how they bring up their children wherever they may be
in the world and how they conduct themselves in public and their
private lives. They also celebrate traditional events in Nepal. One
of their most important gatherings during the year, like many other
groups, is the New Year, which is celebrated in the month of April.
The Nepali American Friendship Association (NAFA) celebrated
New Year 2066 on April 11 at Eagle Heights Community Center in
Madison, Wisconsin, with a pot luck and youth performances. Many
families, with kids in tow, came with home-cooked Nepali dishes,
most of which were deliciously spicy and mouth-watery. There was
also a silent auction meant to raise funds for the association.
Before dinner and the kids' program, the NAFA board held a general
members' meeting and amended a number of their bylaws'
provisions, such as on terms of office of elected officials, the
creation of the office of Public Relations Officer, and on NAFA's
"trust fund." They also held an oath-taking of the new board (bottom

delight of their parents
and other adults.
