Wisconsin Tamil Sangam presents
Tamizh Puthaandu Vizha 2009
       The Indian community of Greater Madison belonging to the Wisconsin Tamil Sangam organization
celebrated New Year or Tamizh Puthaandu Vizha 2009 on May 2, with a program that highlighted the talents of
Indian American boys, girls, young men and women, as well as adults. They gathered at the Middleton
Performing Arts Center, dressed in colorful traditional clothing, all ready to participate in the celebration. Many
attendees also renewed their annual membership as they came in and later networked with friends and
guests at the lobby.
       After the Kutthuvillakku was lighted by Priya Jayaram and Roopa Senapathy, the program started with the
singing of Thamizh Thai Vazhthu by the WITS Board Members. Thereafter, Vijaya Raman, the new president of
WITS, welcomed one and all.
       Performances included Bharatnatyam numbers by Kalaanjali School of Dance; Tamil song by Surya
Ganesan; dance medleys by boys and girls; a musical ensemble; a comedy skit; Bollywood numbers;
Sunil-Sunkara-led boys' song-poetry number; a special performance by UW students Gopika Nair and
Abhisishek Murlimohan; and a colorful group dance by the ladies of WITS.
       The evening was capped by a sumptuous dinner catered by a local Indian Restaurant.--
