Third Annual Asian American Voices Event at UW-Madison
"Reclaiming Our Past: The Untold Stories of Asian America: A Three-Day Series of Arts,
Academic Scholarship, and Commemoration:
      On April 30 and May 1-2, 2009, Asian American student leaders at University of
Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with the  UW Asian American Studies Program,
presented a very special Third Annual Asian American Voices event titled
"Reclaiming our Past: The Untold Stories of Asian America." Day 1 was a
Performance Arts Showcase titled "Go Back to Where You Came From," featuring
spoken word numbers, a video on Japanese American internment, and an art exhibit
on the topic. Day 2 was an academic symposium titled "The Body of Evidence:
Recovering the New/Forgotten," with panelists Dr. Victor Jew (UW-Madison), Prof.
Kent Ono (Univ. of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and Prof. Elena Tajima Creef
(Wellesley College); and with Prof. Leslie Bow (UW-Madison) as moderator. The
keynote speaker on Day 2 was Prof. Sumi Cho (De Paul College of Law). Day 3 was
a memorial service for internment casualty and former UW-Madison student, James
Wakasa. --
