Madison Chinese Cultural Association first-time offering
A taste of Chinese Opera & graceful fan dance

by Heidi M. Pascual
The Madison Chinese Cultural Association led by
community leader Jenny Lee gave Madison an
extraordinary treat at Overture Center’s International
Festival on Feb. 21. They presented the Madison
Beijing Opera Club, featuring jinghu player Thomas
Lee, 89-year old erhu player Chester Wang; gong
players Kun Zhou Lin and Mary Lin; cymbals, Sophia
Wang; and singers Nancy Yang and Shuangmei Tu.
Conducted by Yvonne Lee, the Opera Club
showcased the musical talents of their senior club
members with traditional pieces never before
performed in Madison’s Overture Center.
“We are proud to share the customs and
traditions of Chinese culture, through the ancient art
of music, dance and costumes,” Jenny Lee said.
“We hope that you will take with you a better
understanding and appreciation of the Chinese
people and Chinese heritage.”
MCCA also delighted their audience at the Capitol
Theater with a colorful fan dance performance by the
Madison Chinese Cultural Dance Troupe led by Hui
Xu Cheng. The dancers, aside from Hui, included
Lukang Xu, Yingjie Zhang, Yanjie Lu, Xin Li, Ning
Tao, Xia Gu, Amy Weng, Ouya Zhou, and Shaoqing
Chen. They filled the stage with an awesome
presence of beauty, grace and energy that spelled
celebration and glee.
