International Festival at Overture Center
featured Indian, Chinese & Hmong artists
The annual Overture International Festival on Feb. 16 filled Madison’s
premier center for the arts with literally thousands of people of all ages. Except
for the ticketed performance by Ballet Folklorico Mexico, all performances were
free, featuring music and dances from all over the world performed by local
artists.
Asian Americans “contributed” performances from the Chinese, Indian, and
Hmong groups. The Madison Chinese Cultural Association, led by Jenny Lee,
presented five beautiful numbers at the Capitol Theater: dances by Hua Mulan
Dance Company (left) and the waist drum number by the Tai Qi Club led by Hui
Cheng. Kripa Baskaran and the Natyarpana Dance Company (above r) did their
famous Baratnatyam dance numbers at the Playhouse. Tou Ger Xiong (r), a
Hmong comedian and rap artist, entertained hundreds of kids and their parents
at the Rotunda stage with his mythical storytelling, complete with masks and
other paraphernalia. It was a day of fun, entertainment, and cultural education
for all. — Heidi M. Pascual
