Kalaanjali Dance Company presents
Cinderela in Bharatanatyam
A video report by Heidi M. Pascual
The Kalaanjali Dance Company entertained hundreds of children with their families at the Rotunda of the
Overture Center for the Arts on April 5 with a unique performance of Cinderela in Bharatanatyam. Attendees had
that rare opportunity to learn about Indian classical dance, rhythmic patterns, dexterous footwork and lively
expressions—all while enjoying this beloved fairytale!  There were three shows: 9:30 a.m.; 11 a.m.; and 1 p.m. to
accommodate as many interested audience members as possible.
Choreographed and directed by Meenakshi Ganesan, founder & director of Kalaanjali, this ballet was
premiered in India in December 2007 with a live orchestra. With lyrics of the ballet written by Meenakshi and
music composed by Madison's Indian classical vocalist Vanitha Suresh, Kalaanjali brings this creation to
Madison with dancers as young as 5 years old to adults. In addition to Kalaanjali Dance Co. students topbilled by
Renee Karr Johnson as Cinderela, Kanopy Dance Company artistic director Lisa Thurrell performed as the fairy
godmother.
