Pop music is popular music because it reaches and connects with so many people. It is music that speaks to people of diverse
backgrounds, people raised in different times and different cultures, and reaches something very raw and basic about the
experience of being human. Few new artists are better poised to understand and explore the need for universal appeal inherent in
the genre than Amirah Ali.
Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, the densely populated capital city of Malaysia, Amirah Ali was constantly exposed to the
juxtapositions of different cultures and viewpoints. In this fascinating city several languages are commonly spoken, and varying
religions practiced.  Timeless traditions stand side by side with modern styles and values.  These traditions are expressed in music
unheard of in Western countries, played on instruments like the tanbura, the erhu, the gamelan and the kompang. It is this exposure
to diversity that framed who Amirah Ali is today, both as an artist and as a human being, and led to her expression through her
music World Pop.
Musically, Amirah enjoys exploring ways to fuse aspects of music typical to her part of the world with elements of modern
Western pop. She uses traditional Malay instruments and scales to lend her songs a unique feel, blending them together with
Western pop instruments and rhythms to create a style of music she refers to as World Pop. She hopes this style will make
traditional music more appealing and relevant to the youth while at the same time showing older, more traditional communities that
pop music is not "just noise."
Amirah's self-written debut single, "Katakanlah," delves lyrically into difficult and heartfelt topics.  The song discusses the
desecration of houses of worship within Malaysia, and was aired on local television news including a number of named Malaysian
bloggers after the strong following it gained on YouTube. "Katakanlah" captivates the listener through a blend of beautiful vocals and
world instrumentation, with the tanbura, serving, and tabla infused with modern drums and electronic synths. She hopes that her
music will show how passionately she believes in freedom, equality, harmony, and love regardless of race, religion, gender, or sex.
Ultimately, Amirah wants to know "What makes us who we are?  Is it our cultural and religious makeup, or our actions, intentions
and intelligence?”
Her Aidilfitri EP, “Syawal: A Collection of Raya Songs” released in August 2010, sold over 8,000 copies in just one month.  These
self-written songs by Amirah showcases traditional Malay music fused with modern western music and traditional Chinese
instruments, and includes a bonus English language track entitled “Malaysia” fusing traditional Malay, Chinese and Indian music
with modern western music. By doing this, Amirah Ali accomplishes in a beautiful and truly unique way the ultimate goal of pop
music - to bring people together.
Amirah Ali is currently recording her self-written World Pop Album featuring her hit single "Alone Again".  The album will include
"Tell Me", winner of The 2008 Best Pop Category Award at The Signature Songwriting Competition, and "Katakanlah", World
Category Finalist for The 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Competition.  The "Katakanlah" Club Remix version by Antihesis was
featured in the Confi-dance Compilation CD, Vol. 1 where 30,000 copies was distributed at Virgin Megastores across the Middle
East by Clorets Music (www.cloretsmusic.com)
