The Children of Wisconsin Tibetan Association
Highlighting Tibetan culture in Wisconsin
Most of the children of Tibetans who settled in Wisconsin as part of the U.S.-
Tibetan Resettlement Project in the 1990s were born here in the U.S. As such,
they are considered Americans in every sense of the word. But, there is a big
difference when they are compared to other immigrants’ children. They reflect
and live their parents’ culture and continuously join them as they march or
protest for Tibet’s freedom from Chinese rule.
On January 31, however, the children participated not in a protest march, but
in a cultural show, “Celebrating Youth!” at Monona Terrace Community and
Convention Center  along Monona Lake, to share Tibetan music and dance with
Madisonians. The performers wore their traditional garbs and sang in their
parents’ native tongue, proud of their heritage and grateful for Wisconsin’s giving
them a new home, and most of all, the freedom to express themselves.
