2010 Martin Luther King Holiday events (Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin)
Awardees & speakers honor the memory of MLK
and director of The Rainbow Project); James Gramling (retired Milwaukee judge and
advocate for people’s legal rights for 40 years); and Jonathan Gramling  (civil rights leader
and advocate, and Publisher & Editor of The Capital City Hues). Toni Fay (corporate VP, Time-
Warner) received the  National Achievement award.
      Later that night at the Overture Center, the City of Madison and Dane County presented
the joint City-County MLK Humanitarian awards to Shiva Bidar-Sielaff (director of Community
Partnerships and Interpreter Svcs. at UW Hospital and Clinics and Madison alderperson) and
James Latimer (ret. UW-Madison professor), and the Youth award to Jarrel Brannon Luke
Montgomery of Madison Memorial High School.
      As presentors read the awardees’ real-life contributions to the city, the county, and the
state, people agreed they exemplify the values and commitment to serve others, as Martin
Luther King Jr. had called upon the American people to do. — Heidi M. Pascual  
      The City of Madison, Dane County, and
the State of Wisconsin celebrated on Jan.
18th the 2010 Martin Luther King Holiday
once more with lots of love and passion.
Aside from gatherings that recognized youth
academic achievement and community
volunteerism, the highlight remained to be
the recognition of people who lead their lives
selflessly in the service of others, bridge
barriers, and empower others who are
downtrodden or have no voice in this society.
At the State Capitol, Jonathan Overby and
Oscar Mireles presented the MLK Heritage
awards to Sharyl Kato (child and family
therapist-professional counselor
